Journal Watch

“Why do we have to learn this and what is it good for?” This is a question asked by students at every phase of their education. Journal Watch will help you find the answer. The information discussed in your baccalaureate classes is used daily to help make new discoveries. These discoveries are then reported in scientific journals worldwide.

Admission exams such as the MCAT often use excerpts from professional journals as passages for questions. Reading these journals often will increase your ability to get through the minutia and focus on the important ideas and purpose of the article, thereby increasing your score.

At Journal Watch meetings we will evaluate cutting-edge articles, from a variety of journals, in a round table discussion. We will first go over the article to be sure everyone understands the information. Then we will discuss particular passages in the text with regard to quality and whether the data presented supports the author’s conclusions.

Prospective topics for Journal Watch this year include stem cell research and organic farming; what are the benefits or detriments of each? Find out how what you know now can someday help the world, or make you rich!

Come join us and participate in the discussion.
