These are pictures from the prerelease of Super Mario 64.

The most obvious thing in this picture is the weird spike on top of the mountain.
This is the battle with king Bob-omb. As you may see, it would be more challenging with the spike there. This was later removed.
The only noticable thing different in this picture is the HUD.
The 3D character model of Mario has not yet been completed
In this screenshot, the boos seem to be bigger than those in the final
The texture of Bowser seems to be much different. Also, the HUD has an older font style as well as layout.
These 2 screenshots have early 3D character models of Bowser. The HUD is exactly the same as the above photo.

This screenshot must have been taken when the game was almost completed. The only things left to do are to change the HUD and to add more trees.
This screenshot was taken early in development. First of all, look at the 3D model of Mario. He looks very polygonal. Next, look at the castle. It's as plain as can be. And if you didn't notice, the windows and flags on the castle have been completely changed.
The HUD has an older font and layout, and Mario's 3D model has not yet been completed, as with the Twhomps.
This is another picture taken early in development. First of all, the HUD has an older font and layout. Secondly, there are 2 flower beds in that location in the final. Thirdly, there is no background!
This was the early entry room for the metal cap stage. Since this time, the room became more of a rectangle shape, and I don't remember there being a metal box nearby.
I don't remember Pokey having such a big smile on his face.
It seems almost perfect, but instead of a fence, there's a brick wall. Also, the color is a bit darker than the final.
These 2 pictures, I believe, are the Dire, Dire Docks entry room, but it's been completely changed.

There aren't any snowmen on the bridge!
It's the penguin race, but I don't remember there being a timer.
This screenshot demonstrates the older power meter.
Introducing... the strangest Super Mario 64 beta screenshot I have ever come across! First of all, there are no steps up to where Mario is standing. Next, there's no door to Bowser or Princess' secret slide. Also, the door on the bottom right doesn't have the wooden design like it has in the final. The door next to Mario doesn't have the keyhole, most likely so that the makers could easily move around the castle.
The old start menu. The only thing that has been changed is the font.
First of all, look at the HUD. It has an older font and layout, as well as the power meter. Next, there's no water spout thing at the bottom, like there is in the final.

Special thanks to System Crash.
